Episode 1 — Introducing a podcast for liberatory educators! (podcast recap)

In this debut episode of “Rethinking Normal: A Podcast for Liberatory Educators,” I provide an overview of what this podcast is and what you can expect going forward.

Rethinking Normal: The Essence of the Podcast

Let’s start by unraveling the name itself—Rethinking Normal. It encapsulates what this podcast aims to achieve. Throughout our episodes, we will delve into pedagogical approaches that disrupt the status quo and challenge learners to critically examine how societal norms are influenced by oppressive systems. These are systems such as ableism, patriarchy, white supremacy, heterosexism, and colonialism. The podcast aims to equip educators with the tools and knowledge needed to dismantle and reimagine these systems with their students.

A Blueprint for Anti-Oppression Education:

My intention is to share everything I know and am learning from fellow educators about translating anti-oppression theory into actionable classroom practices. Each episode will dissect a powerful activity or pedagogical concept that can lead participants toward transformative and anti-oppressive learning experiences.

In addition to sharing my own teaching practices, I’ll be hosting interviews with other radical educators and gathering their insights from teaching in this field. This podcast is designed for a diverse audience, including school teachers, college professors, DEI trainers, and anyone passionate about educating others through a radical lens.

Resources for Your Journey:

I’m committed to providing you with everything you need to implement the activities discussed on the podcast. As new episodes are released, you’ll find corresponding facilitator guides and materials becoming available, so that you can apply these ideas in your educational context.

All resources are available at a pay-what-you-can price point, because my goal is to ensure that these resources are accessible to anyone, regardless of their financial situation.

A Gift for You:

I want to highlight a special resource. I’ve curated a detailed list of my favorite anti-oppression pedagogy resources. I highly recommend visiting the homepage to download this free reading list. It’s an excellent way to discover new materials and gain insight into the thinkers and concepts that will shape our podcast discussions.

It’s Good to Have You!

If you are passionate about the world of liberatory education and anti-oppressive pedagogy, I hope that you will continue to follow the podcast and engage with all that Rethinking Normal has to offer!
